What to send, and what comes back
Send whatever exists. A finished packet is welcome; so is a proposal and three half-drafts; so is a return letter and the file it came back with. The review measures what is there — it does not need the file to be complete to be useful, and it is often most useful before the file is complete.
Useful, when they exist
- The proposal — especially the method chapter, which is the protocol of record every other document measures from
- The IRB application, in whatever state it is in
- The consent form, with the version you believe is current
- Recruitment materials — the flyer, the email, the post — as you intend to run them
- The instruments, or their names and sources
- Site permission letters, signed or drafted, or the name of the site and who would sign
- Your ethics-training certificate, so its currency and module set can be read
- Anything the board has already written back
What comes back
- A reply from hello@purdueirb.com acknowledging what arrived and asking for anything that would change the reading.
- The written findings list — each drift with the places it reads two ways, each missing element named, and the determination reading: which category the design as drawn belongs to.
- One of two lines. "Submit it", if the file is clean — and nothing more. Or the quote, in writing, for the package you would like carried: the plan, the complete file, or the whole process end to end.
Nothing is filed, and nothing is quoted, until you say so. The study, the data and the findings remain yours throughout, and the board's decision is always its own.
Before you send: the five dimensions
If you would rather measure first, the tolerance check on the homepage asks five questions from memory — the sample number, the instrument names, the site letter, the consent version, the category claim — and returns an honest reading, including "you do not need us". The questions sheet answers the things candidates most often want settled before they send anything: whether the project needs IRB review at all, why files come back, what exempt and expedited mean, whether data may be collected before the letter exists.
